A Study on the Relationship between Perceived Health Status, Depression and Self-esteem of the Elderly in Long Term Care Facilities

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived health status, depression and self-esteem of elderly in long term care facilities. Methods: From March and to May in 2011, 146 elders who lived at welfare facilites were surveyd by using structured questionnaires including interviews. To analyse the data, percentages, means, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe’s test and Pearson Correlation Coefficients were calaulated by using the SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Result: There was a significant positive correlation between perceived health status and self-esteem. There were significant negative correlation between perceived health status and depression and between self-esteem and depression. Conclusion: The result of this study indicates that elders with a lower education status and no spouse have a higher level of depression. The elderly who were 75-80 years old have a lower level of perceived health status, higher level of depression and lower level of self-esteem than other groups. This study might be useful to develop nursing intervention program to improve perceived health status, self-esteem and reduced depression these elders.
